PREMIER INN

Staff at Premier Inn hotels in Hemel Hempstead and Tring helped raise £1,500 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity during the hotel chain’s National Charity Week.

The team at Hemel Hempstead Premier Inn organised a bric-a-brac sale in the town centre, while in Tring staff held a car wash, cake and book sales and took part in a sponsored pyjama walk. Their efforts contributed to a fantastic £1,500 fundraising total for the region. They joined staff around the country who took part in a range of activities to raise much needed funds towards Great Ormond Street Hospital’s redevelopment.

Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, treating patients from across the UK, often for rare and complex conditions. Team members across the company selected Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity as its charity partner in a staff vote in May 2012.

Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants, which runs Premier Inn, has pledged to raise £7.5 million towards the Premier Inn Clinical Building, a brand new, state-of-the-art centre due to open in 2017.

The new facilities will form part of the new Mittal Children’s Medical Centre, replacing outdated wards in some of the hospital’s oldest buildings and providing more privacy and comfort for families, including space for a parent to sleep by their child’s bedside. So far, over £2 million has been raised.

Antonia Dalmahoy, Director of Corporate Partnerships at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, says: “It’s wonderful that staff in Dacorum embraced National Charity Week and worked so hard to raise funds. Since the partnership began with Premier Inn, I have been really moved by the enthusiasm of the company’s employees and their desire to get involved and make a real difference to the hospital. I’d like to thank them all for their efforts.”

KINGS LANGLEY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Our President was very pleased to welcome six visitors to our meeting this month.

As usual we will be having a stall at Kings Langley Carnival on June 21 and will be selling cakes.

There is a Group Meeting and Spring Council meeting this month, several of our members will be attending these events. Our President will be holding a Light Lunch on Friday, when there is also a Mayor’s Coffee morning at the Civic Centre which we have also been invited to, but will be unable to attend because of our lunch.

All our various clubs are going well, film club will recommence in September when the nights are darker again, but the rambling club will be starting very soon.

The Competition last month was to make as many words from ‘Bletchley Park’ and was very successful, we had lots of entries and the winner Moyna Taylor managed 364 words.

This was because our speaker for the evening was John Wilson, with a talk on Bletchley Park, giving an outline of its history and use during the war. There where also photos shown of the Park and the Enigma machines used in their code breaking.

For this talk we were pleased to welcome a few of the members’ husbands.

PARKINSONS UK WEST HERTS BRANCH

Parkinsons Awareness Week was marked by the West Herts branch of Parkinsons UK last week with a number of events. These included a talk to the branch on Thursday evening by Dr Prasad Korlipara, a neurologist specialising in Parkinsons, who is also the West Herts branch’s Honorary President. Dr Korlipara spoke of the advances being made in treating Parkinsons, and his hopes that current research will lead to a possible cure in the future. He also gave useful advice to patients and their families on how to manage the disease.

The following day (Friday) some branch members held a charity collection outside Waitrose in Berkhamsted. This collection brought in a total of £863.23, a record amount, and more than the branch has ever collected in a single day.

Branch Secretary Richard Windle said: “I think the words of hope from Dr Korlipara that advances are being made in the treatment of Parkinsons may have spurred us on to make a real effort in our collection outside Waitrose. We are all grateful to the people of Berkhamsted for their generosity, and to Waitrose for their continuing support for West Herts Parkinsons.”

ST JOSEPH’S CARE HOME

St Josephs Care Home held a party to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

It was a lovely event and very well supported by friends and family of the home. The St Joe’s Choir, made up of about 20 residents and led by choir mistress Avelia Moisey, put on a concert of favourite songs that they have been rehearsing since January. Everyone enjoyed singing along.

We were delighted that Mr Derek Townsend, who opened st Joseph’s 20 years ago, came to wish us well and helped manager Nicky Lacey, to cut the Anniversary Cake. I know that Derek would be happy to give a phone interview about the home and the event. We were also very pleased that Mr Ian Sloan, Chief Executive of B&M Care homes, was able to join us for the occasion.

TRING TOGETHER

The Tring Together Spring Fayre starts on Saturday and runs until May 10 inclusive.

It consists of many activities which are free of charge and aimed to get people of all ages out and about in our lovely countryside as well as in Tring.

There are lots of walks, fitness activities and things for children to do and the event is supported by many volunteers and local sponsors. For full details please see www.tringtogether.org.uk

Our launch event is on Church Square from 10.30am to 2.30pm and there will be a petting zoo, charity and community stalls and a fitness challenge taking place.

The Photographic Competition is now in its third year and forms part of the Fayre. Organised in association with the Natural History Museum at Tring and sponsored by Pictons Solicitors, this competition is open to everyone and will be judged in three categories: under 16s, 16 and overs and professional photographers.

The winning shots will be displayed in Gallery 5 at The Natural History Museum, Tring from Saturday, May 17 to Friday, June 6.

We will accept either prints or digital files, but the digital limit is five photos plus a suggested donation of £5 to cover the cost of printing. Entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form and sent to info@TringTogether.org.uk or dropped in at Pictons Solicitors, 11 High Street, Tring, HP23 5AL by the end of Monday, May 12. Judging is on May 16.

ABBOTS LANGLEY PLAYERS

The Abbots Langley Players will be reviving its production of Peter Whelan’s The Herbal Bed for a project that the whole village community can both contribute to and benefit from.

The production, which will be staged in April 2015, is part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages – the UK’s biggest amateur theatre project.

ALP’s pitch to the RSC was to involve as many local people and community groups as possible, making the production an effort that would highlight the depth and diversity of cultural activity in the village and raise the profile of Abbots Langley as a whole.

One of the main features of the project will be the growth and use of a working Jacobean herb garden for a set during the production. After show week, the garden will be donated to Abbots Langley to be used as a communal resource by the village.

Colette Holmes, directing, said: “We are thrilled to be one of fewer than 100 groups taking part in this prestigious RSC project. We are now keen to hear from groups or individuals that might like to be involved in the production – the more the merrier.”

ADEYFIELD TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

Members were welcomed to the April meeting by chairman Mrs Gwyneth Wood. After a few items of general business our speakers for the evening were introduced, Ken and June Brazier. This was a return visit, as they had spoken to us last June about their involvement with the charity Mercy Ships.

This time Ken told us of his trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise much-needed funds.

The trek, which took a week, began in tropical conditions and finished at the summit in temperatures well below freezing surrounded by snow.

Ken said that it had been the most amazing experience of his life.

Elizabeth Cooper thanked Ken for his inspirational talk and hoped that he and June would return next year.
We won’t be having a meeting in May as we are going to celebrate our 62nd birthday with a lunch out together. Our next evening meeting will be on June 4 when we welcome back Ann Farrer. We meet at Adeyfield Community Centre on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.45pm.

GADE SOCIAL CLUB

Owing to the closure of the Gadebridge Townswomen’s Guild, some of the members decided to start a new club. We had our first meeting on Thursday , March 13, when twenty ladies enjoyed a quiz with a cup of tea. This was followed by a disscusion on the future of the club.

At our second meeting in April, we had a speaker, Denise Chenells from the Adeyfield Townswomen’s Guild, who talked about her uncle who had led an interesting life and had even looked after the Duke ofWindsor’s horse during the Great War.

Our meetings are held in the function room in the Gade and Goose pub, Gadebridge, at 2pm on the second Thursday of every month. We also hold an activity afternoon on the third Tuesday of every month featuring scrabble and other games.

ACCESS FOR ALL

The Hemel Hempstead based ‘Access for All’ group is planning this year’s visits to help countryside and park managers to look at some of the good and not so good aspects of the open spaces around the area that they care for.

Last year the group provided reports for the National Trust, the county wildlife trust, Dacorum Borough Council, Chesham Town Council and the Box Moor Trust itself.

This June their work is also to stage a cameo at the Chilterns Access conference. The team includes people with seeing, mobility and hearing difficulties and is always looking for new members who enjoy the natural environment but sometimes struggle to do everything they would like to achieve.

The “Access all Areas” group is supported by the Box Moor Trust and received start-up funding from the Chilterns Conservation Board in 2012.

TRING WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

March saw us celebrating our 45th birthday. We started our evening with an excellent fish and chip supper from our new local shop, followed by a section of mouth watering desserts provided by the committee.

Bob Harding-Jones then spoke to us about British comedy greats,from the early Music Hall days and their roots in radio, to rebirth into television, which brought back many happy memories of the 1950s.

Our meeting on April 22 will be a Talk on Basket Making from recycled materials, We meet at the Memorial Hall, formerly the Red Cross Hall, in Tring at 7.45pm.
