A suspected arson attack has taken place on a derelict church which has been earmarked for the potential development of a new mosque in Hemel Hempstead.

A fire crew from the town’s Queensway station were called to the blaze at 8.55am and used one hose reel jet and two sets of breathing apparatus to put out the flames at the currently unused Nash Mills Methodist Church site on Barnacres Road.

The scene was made safe by 9.26am.

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and a crime report will be compiled before police begin an investigation.

A fire in the open at the same site - on which pre-application plans suggest a new mosque and incorporated community centre could be built -also took place back in September.
