A private concert was recently held to celebrate the birthday of the founder an orchestra of amateur musicians – who is 100 today.
The half-hour performance was held at St John’s Church in Boxmoor by the current members of Steffi Logie’s group.
She founded the Dacorum Recreation Orchestra in 1980 to give recent school leavers and older people somewhere to play their instruments together without the fear of auditioning.
The group is made up mostly of people who play at the level of grades three to six – and some have not taken any exams at all.
As the orchestra does not give public concerts, it is particularly helpful to people who are shy about performing.
Unfortunately Steffi had fallen over the day before Wednesday’s 8pm concert, so gave it a miss and instead stayed at home to get some rest and relaxation.
Word has since come back that she is OK and looking forward to having a slice of birthday cake.
Orchestra secretary Peter White said: “She was born in Berlin before World War One broke out – she’s a remarkable woman.”
