A couple who are about to mark their golden wedding anniversary have no intention of slowing down after 50 years as man and wife.
And to prove it Bill and Gladys Pearce whizzed around the famous Silverstone racecourse in a James Bond-style Aston Martin Vantage to mark their happy milestone.
The thrilling day out was organised by the Highfield couple’s two sons David and Richard.
The golden pair tied the knot on March 28 five decades ago at Boxmoor’s St John’s Church – the same church where Gladys’ parents were wed.
They have a series of celebrations with family and friends planned to mark the anniversary but Gladys, 67, said the driving day leading up to her wedding anniversary was a lovely gift.
She said: “Both of us just went: ‘Wow’. I thought: ‘Right, I’m just going to go for it.’ It was marvellous.
“It’s a bit different to just cutting a cake but I never dreamed that I would be driving an Aston Martin, let alone at Silverstone, and how fast you go is unbelievable.”
The couple each got to complete laps around the famous track and Gladys got an extra treat when she was driven around the course by an expert behind the wheel.
“It was absolutely gobsmacking,” she said.
Bill, 76, is a retired truck driver so he’s used to driving and Gladys said being a truckie’s wife means she’s always been expected to drive like a ‘truckie’.
“But I’m still being told off after all these years,” she said.”
The couple, who are keen bowls players at Potten End, have lived in their Highfield home for 46 years and purchased it under the council’s right to buy scheme in the 1970s. “It has been a very happy little house for us,” said Gladys.
So what’s their secret to a happy and long marriage? “Give and take is what the old ’uns always used to say and by golly that’s right,” said Gladys.
“Make the most of what you have got and keep smiling – we always have a giggle.”
The pair will also be marking their anniversary with afternoon tea at top Watford hotel and conference centre The Grove, thanks to a friend, and they’re also visiting relations in Yorkshire as well as planning a trip away to Hayling Island in Hampshire.
