A popular lollipop lady says she was left ‘numb’ after being crowned School Crossing Patrol of the Year after clocking up 33 years of service.

Carole Hicks has kept children from Swing Gate Primary School safe when crossing the road for more than three decades and said she was ‘shocked’ to scoop the gong at Herts County Council’s School Travel Awards.

Carole, 69, said: “I went numb. I had a little cry when I got back to my seat. It was very emotional. I want to say a big thank you to all the parents who voted for me. It’s very humbling.”

Parent Allie Edmonds said: “Carole is out rain or shine with a cheery smile, and she’s loved by all the children and parents alike.”
