The family of a baby girl who died from a heart condition aged just six weeks and one day old have been making a splash in her memory.
Team Macy, the charity set up in honour of the Cruickhanks family’s daughter, held a sponsored swimathon at Hemel Hempstead’s Sportspace last week.
During the event mum Helen Cruickshanks’ son Sam, six, swam 100 metres and daughter Libby swam a massive 66 lengths – a distance of more than a mile.
The charity has so far raised more than £26,000, with funds yet to be counted from the swimathon. Half of the money has already been given to the paediatric intensive care unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital, which funded vital breathing equipment for babies with conditions like Macy’s.
Helen said: “Our goal is to raise awareness of congenital heart defects which are the number one childhood killer in the UK.
“We are now saving to improve the genetic research so that one day we might prevent another family from the total devastation of losing a child.” Visit teammacy.co.uk for more about the charity.
