Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning has praised the constituency’s latest employment rates, which put it among the best in the country.

The number of people claiming job seekers’ allowance in Hemel Hempstead throughout last month was 1,366, which represents a rate of 2.6% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64.

The national average unemployment rate is 6.9%.

The town is the 404th highest of the 650 UK constituencies, with the first representing the highest rate of unemployment and the 650th the lowest.

The number of claimants is 466 lower than in April last year, and 55 lower than in March of this year.

Mr Penning said: “Our unemployment levels have dropped again so I am thrilled – the figures for this area are much lower than the national average.

“We are getting lots of new jobs and businesses coming to the town, and they are quality jobs, too. I am really pleased.”
