Hemel Hempstead’s town centre tax enquiry office is earmarked for closure later this year – but officials at HM Revenue & Customs insist that they will still be able to offer a personal service to anyone who needs help.
The shutdown of all eight enquiry offices in the county will follow the launch of a new flexible support service for those who need extra help with their tax affairs.
Face to face sessions can be arranged at designated venues or in an invidual’s own home, but most queries will be handled by a phone helpline manned by experts.
The move follows a successful seven month trial in the north-east of England.
HM Revenue & Customs personal tax chief Ruth Owen said: “The pilot showed that this is a valuable service for those who cannot get the help they need elsewhere.
“Our centres offer a great service but they are spread unevenly across the UK, the number of people using them continues to fall, and our research shows that most customers who do use them don’t actually need to.”
