A Bovingdon councillor’s grandmother was the first woman in Nigeria to complete the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

Councillor Gbola Adeleke’s grandmother completed the Hajj – as the journey is known – in 1927, it emerged at the launch of an exhibition at Hemel Hempstead’s Old Town Hall celebrating the pilgrimage.

The event was organised by community group Global Pindd, which was founded by Bennetts End councillor Suqlain Mahmood.
