Hemel Hempstead’s Royal Mail sorting depot is one of just 100 in the country to trial Sunday openings from this weekend.

The giant sorting centre on Maxted Road – which serves the Home Counties North region – has been chosen for the pilot as it has among the highest parcel volumes in the whole of the UK.

Recently-privatised Royal Mail’s network of around 1,400 delivery offices is currently open six days aweek, but the new initiative is designed to make it easier for online shoppers not at home during the rest of the week to pick up their parcels.

Almost half of Royal Mail’s delivery offices already open later on Wednesday evenings to enable people to collect items that could not be delivered due to no-one being at home during the normal postal round.

But the delivery office, within the town’s Maylands industrial estate, will now also be open on Sundays from midday to 4pm to enable further flexibility to those who choose to do their shopping at the click of a button.

Royal Mail operation director Tony Fox said: “We are continuing to be more customer responsive and providing more options for people to receive items they have ordered online.

“I am delighted to pilot Sunday afternoon opening at around 100 of our delivery offices across the UK with the highest parcel volumes, including Hemel Hempstead.”

In June, Royal Mail Group’s express parcels business, Parcelforce Worldwide, also launched a Sunday delivery service for online shoppers, through participating e-retailers. The service is available to contract customers across the UK.
