A couple who breed exotic animals are shell-shocked by their snake’s surprise Easter clutch of 27 eggs.

Siouxsie Gillett and Mark Amey who run Bovingdon pet store Ameyzoo knew their tiger reticulated python was ‘gravid’, the correct term for pregnancy in snakes, but did not expect her to lay the eggs over the bank holiday.

Siouxsie said: “It was unexpected, but very appropriate that it happened to fall over Easter.

“We are very pleased. Breeding is very difficult and we are never guaranteed anything with this size of snake. It is a ‘hold your breath’ process, we just don’t know what the outcome will be.”

The eggs are being incubated and the hatchlings will emerge in 88 days, each at around 2ft long.
