A two-year project to save a village’s old Victorian school from redevelopment is nearing completion, after villagers took on the transformation themselves.
The Ivinghoe Old School Community Hub will hold an open day on Saturday following two years of hard work and dedication.
Back in 2011, there was uproar when plans for Buckinghamshire County Council to sell off the old school building emerged.
The Save Old School community group then stepped in and stopped them, acquiring a 25-year lease to enable them to breathe new life into the building.
After help from lottery funds and other generous charity donations, the committee was able to sink £96,000 into the refurbishment.
However, the project still requires an additional £13,000 to enable the finishing touches to be done and the open day is set to intrigue villagers and visitors, in the hope that they will be inspired to get involved with fundraising events to generate the money needed.
The hub, on the village high street, will host a cafe, lunch clubs and other community events.
