Photographer's blog: 16.4.09

Hooray! My latest grandchild has been born at last.

He was nearly a fortnight late and although my daughter Rachel wasn't able to have a home birth as she had wanted she was lucky enough to go to Stoke Mandeville's new maternity unit.

It had only been open for two weeks and Rachel's was the first water birth in their enormous pool. The midwives were all marvellous too and we give special thanks to Ester and Aoife.

I was privileged to be allowed to be her birth partner along with her partner Ed. He was a rock, absolutely brilliant, supporting her and encouraging the whole time. (As of course I did too).

Charlie Ben appeared at 14.43 after a 3 hour labour (nice and quick).

He weighed 8lb 10oz so he was a good weight. He is absolutely perfect.

Of course I had my cameras with me and I managed to get a photograph of his first breath. They allow the baby to just float to the surface when it's born and baby doesn't try to breathe until their face is out of the water.

His four year brother Dylan is absolutely fascinated by him and tells everyone that he has a baby brother. He helps his mummy when he can and he's being very good.

This photo was taken by one of my grandchildren with my camera. From left Mummy Rachel, big brother Dylan, Nana (me) and baby Charlie Ben.

This is the fourth birth that I've been lucky enough to be present at (that's not counting my own) and it's really made me think about becoming a Doula (mother's support). More about that in another blog report.

Next week I shall have taken some more 'professional' photographs and I'll tell you how I did them.
