Police awards turns into a family affair

A POLICE officer’s brother and sister were honoured along with him for their efforts in bringing judo to their community.

Matthew and Joanna Rush were given Hertfordshire Constabulary Awards when their brother Det Ins Laurie Rush was handed his chief constable’s commendation at a ceremony held at police headquarters in Welwyn Garden City to recognise long service, outstanding work and bravery.

Mr Rush, who is based at Hemel Hempstead police station, said: “I’m chuffed to bits and it’s special because my brother and sister were recognised as well.

“Commendations are normally for officers so it was great they got an award and our mum could come along, too.”

The siblings established Rush Judo in Northchurch a year ago to honour their father, Gordon, who supported their love of judo when they were growing up.

The weekly not-for-profit club which is based at Northchurch Social Club is a real family affair with cousins, uncles and aunts all helping out.

Scores of youngsters of all abilities have been able to enjoy judo and build confidence and costs are kept low at £2 a session.
