THIS year’s Poppy Appeal in Herts will be launched from the slopes of the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

A former soldier will be joined by a potential youth Olympian to ascend the 160 metre slope surrounded by giant poppies on Friday, October 21.

Later MP Mike Penning and Deputy Lieutenant Colin Fitzgerald will join veterans and volunteers for a reception at the snow sports venue in St Albans Hill.

The Royal British Legion is hoping to make this year the biggest collection yet, topping last year’s county total of almost £715,000.

Natasha Robertson, Poppy Appeal community fundraiser, said: “We’re urging everyone to throw their support behind Hertfordshire’s Poppy Appeal 2011, as money raised will go towards providing vital care for injured service people,”
