The firm responsible for a massive fire that raged for days and was not fully extinguished for three months no longer has a duty to clear the site.
Instead, the mammoth job has passed to CP Holdings, the owners of the Appspond Lane site in Potters Crouch on the border of Hemel Hempsted and St Albans.
Wood Recycling Services Ltd relinquished the duty after entering into voluntary liquidation.
The Environment Agency continues to work with CP Holdings to clear the site and now another company - Navitas Environmental Ltd - wants to set up an electricity generating biomass facility there.
It has already been given the green light by planning officials but the Environment Agency is considering whether to grant permits that will allow the work to go ahead. CP Holdings did not wish to comment on the situation.
