Campaigners say they have collected up to 7,000 petition signatures in their bid to save Hemel Hempstead’s ice rink from closure.

Skaters took to the town centre on Saturday to raise awareness of the imminent closure of Jarman Park’s Planet Ice and to muster up support for their campaign.

Users of the venue were recently told that the doors will close at the end of the month and that a new rink is not part of regeneration plans for the leisure site because it is not deemed viable.

Campaign spokesman Mandy Lester said: “It is the only rink in Hertfordshire and beyond so it is not only Hemel Hempstead that is losing a rink.”

Although she did admit that it could be a ‘better used facility’, she said: “We believe that it can be viable, it just needs the right advertising. We feel that Planet Ice has let it down.”

A Save Hemel Ice Rink page on Facebook has attracted more than 900 members and campaigners plan to take to the streets again.

The HeraldExpress has been unable to speak to Planet Ice bosses despite several attempts to make contact.
