VILLAGE leaders want new speed restrictions to make streets safer for children walking to school – but Herts County Council says they can’t have them.

Little Gaddesden Parish Council is campaigning for a 30mph speed zone throughout the village.

Members also say there should be new chicanes or speed cameras on Nettleden Road between Ringshall and the Bridgewater Arms pub.

Councillor Rob Irving said: “Lots of children walk to school down the road. We want them to be safe.”

He said the council has visited the village and said it’s willing to repaint road markings – but that it doesn’t meet the criteria for the other, more costly measures.

Council spokesman Tom Shipp said: “Although there is no accident history in the village and a speed limit change is unlikely to be required, we take the concerns of the parish council seriously and will carry out a speed and volume survey through the village.”
