THIS poor goose with a plastic beer collar stuck round its neck prompted a flurry of calls to the RSPCA after it was spotted in Hemel Hempstead’s Water Gardens.

Officers from the RSPCA tried on a number of occasions to catch the bird but just could not get hold of it until animal welfare officer Kate Wright managed to grab it last Tuesday.

“I decided to go back again and have another go on and I just managed to get close enough to quickly grab him,” she said. “Once I had him we were then able to cut the plastic off his neck. He wasn’t injured and once he had been checked over we released him again.

“I can’t say if he was grateful or not – he just went straight off to the water again without even a thank-you.”

Kate issued a warning about the importance of getting rid of litter properly. “This incident does act to as a timely reminder to people that they should always dispose of litter and rubbish correctly as sadly, cats, small animals and wildlife can get caught in them and it can cause a tremendous amount of pain and injury if this happens.”
