A selection of the opportunities available this week through Volunteer Centre Dacorum.
Could you bring some Christmas cheer to those less fortunate than you?
Hemel Hempstead’s Salvation Army has put out a call for volunteers to ensure the smooth running of its annual Christmas Day Dinner.
Last year over 180 elderly and isolated people enjoyed lunch at the citadel on Waterhouse Street, or a meal delivered to their door by real life Christmas angels.
None of this can happen this year unless a qualified chef comes forward to save Christmas Day.
There will be lots of help on hand but you would need to make sure that around 100 meals on wheels are ready by 11.30am and the sit down lunch for 80 is ready to be served at 12.30pm.
If you can save the day for hundreds of needy people, the Salvation Army team would love to hear from you.
DENS ACTION AGAINST HOMELESSNESS
This home-grown charity needs someone with an eagle eye to sort donations.
DENS has been providing emergency accommodation at its permanent night shelter for 10 years and has expanded to run a day centre, offer move on accommodation, take on the rent aid deposit scheme and most recently to run Dacorum’s foodbank offering emergency food parcels to people in crisis.
It also operates a furniture warehouse and charity shop from its base at Paradise in central Hemel Hempstead.
This role involves sorting items for a specific purpose, either for sale in the shop or on line or put to good use by DENS service users when moving into their own homes.
Practical volunteers are also needed to help clean and renovate donated items of furniture.
Skills in furniture renovation would be useful but are not essential.
Times are to suit you. This is a chance to join a friendly team and make a real difference to people’s lives.
The Volunteer Centre works to march organisations across the borough and those who want to lend a hand, and we are always grateful for the support we receive to help us achieve those goals.
Last year we were able to benefit from the proceeds of a fundraising cake sale our Roundhouse base, while customers were able to tuck into some tasty treats.
This year a team from Hemel Hempstead’s Cavendish School with be running a charity gift wrap service on Thursdays and Saturdays in an empty unit at the town’s Riverside Shopping Centre, opposite H&M, and all proceeds will support our work.
