A takeaway business has issued a warning about fake £20 that are doing the rounds in Hemel Hempstead.

Staff at The May Fu Chinese and fish and chip shop in Gadebridge have had three incidents of customers attempting to pay with counterfeit notes.

One worker, who does not want to be named, refused to hand over food when she was given a fake note as payment. She said: “It was very, very obvious. It was totally discoloured. It didn’t have the black line down the middle when you hold it up to the light.”

Police say there have been five reported cases of counterfeit notes being used to pay for goods in Hemel Hempstead since the beginning of the year. This does not include the May Fu incidents.

They investigate and pass their findings on to the Bank of England, which looks into cases.
