IN the true spirit of Chrustmas, villagers have decided to go without their usual festive tree and will give the money instead to a struggling charity close to their hearts.

The Gazette reported last week that The Hospice of St Francis may have to close its in-house day service for terminally-ill patients who live at home.

Northchurch Parish Council has offered a helping hand to the hospice – by cancelling the order for a village Christmas tree.

Its members usually spend about £650 on a new tree to go in the High Street in the run-up to the festive season.
