£4m winner in dock for fraud

A MAN who won more than £4 million on the National Lottery jackpot appeared in court yesterday charged with claiming around £15,000 in benefits.

A national newspaper has reported that Edward Putman, 46, from Kings Langley, took the amount in income support and housing benefit from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

He appeared at St Albans Magistrates’ Court yesterday following an investigation by the DWP.

It is understood that Putman opted for no publicity when he won the lottery in 2009.

It is alleged that he continued to take Government benefits for 20 months following his win.

The case has been adjourned.
