Two neighbours who leafleted 600 homes asking people to help make icy pavements safer to walk on got just three responses.

Diana Jones, 69, of William Street, Berkhamsted, came up with the idea after talking to a neighbour about how, whenever it snows, walkways are left like ‘ice rinks’ afterwards.

Diana said: “A few households do clear the pavement in front of their residence and as soon as you got to that bit, it was such a relief.”

She and her neighbour made leaflets, encouraging others to follow suit, before sending them out to homes across north-east Berkhamsted.

Their leaflets read: “PLEASE, when the snow falls, clear the pavement in front of your residence before it becomes a skating rink.

“And if your next-door neighbour is physically incapable of doing this, please clear their part of the pavement for them as well.”

Diana said the area she leafleted is used by many pedestrians walking to Berkhamsted railway station and town centre.

Her leaflets also asked people if they would like to join a group called the East Berkhamsted Neighbours clearing icy pavements that are not fronted by residential properties.

Diana admits she is a ‘little disappointed’ by the public response to her appeal so far but said: “The few responses I have had have been quite positive.

“They think it is very nice to look out for and try to help each other.

“They have said things like: ‘This initiative is a brilliant idea.’

“Somebody else said: ‘This helps towards the neighbourhood,’ and another said: ‘How nice that people can still be bothered to get together and look after each other.’”
