A lesson in charity for village schoolchildren

editorial image

Children got a lesson in charity by selling cakes for Barnardo’s.

The Year 4 students of St Mary’s CofE First School in New Road, Northchurch, made £145 by selling the tasty treats to their friends earlier this month.

Their teacher Anne Forsyth said: “We are studying the Victorians so they all made a Victoria sponge in memory of Queen Victoria.”

Barnardo’s education fundraiser Janet Meredith visited the children the next week to speak about how the charity was set up to help poor and homeless children in Victorian times. They gave her the £145.
