A clean sweep for town

Town centre workers turned out to do their bit to clean up the streets as part of a council drive.

Workers from Hemel Hempstead's retail shops, supermarkets and fast food joints armed themselves with litter pickers and bin bags for the 60-minute blitz.

Dacorum Borough Council's Clean, Safe and Green department organised three makeover sessions, which were held at litter hotspots in Marlowes, Maylands and Apsley retail park.

Mayor of Dacorum Stephen Holmes and Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning were on hand to help out with the tidy.

Supermarkets in the borough also organised their own independent litter picks with staff to spruce up the area.

In total, 22 businesses have collected more than 60 bags of litter.

Councillor for environment and sustainability Bert Chapman said: "This is the first Business Clean Up Week of its kind in Hertfordshire and the support that we have seen from businesses has been fantastic.

It shows that people are serious about making Dacorum a better place to live and work, and it's great to see businesses getting involved and instilling civic pride back into the wider community."

The litter picks are part of the Let's Tidy Dacorum Together campaign. If you would like to organise a litter pick, call 01442 228017 for a litter pick toolkit.
