An end to mixed wards

Health chiefs say they have eliminated same-sex wards in hospitals including Hemel Hempstead and Watford ahead of a government deadline.

The East of England Strategic Health Authority says all hospitals had complied with the standard by April 1.

Margaret Berry, interim chief nursing officer, said: "Patients have told us that same-sex accommodation makes a big difference to how comfortable and relaxed they feel while they are in hospital. Therefore, it is an essential part of delivering high-quality care and a powerful sign of our commitment to treating all patients with respect."

The government says all hospitals must comply with the standard by the end of the year of face fines.
