Anger at discount card cuts

A charity has hit out at cuts to the Dacorum card that will hit the elderly particularly hard.

Age Concern says there is anger and disappointment among older residents at the changes, which will mean higher prices at lunch clubs and sports centres.

Dacorum Borough Council has reduced the benefits the card gives as part of cuts totalling 1.2million.

Atifa Ali-Khan, chief executive at Age Concern Dacorum, said: "The impact is obvious. They are elderly on a tight budget, particularly those on a Dacorum card. This is going to make it even tighter.

"Our clients are feeling the pinch - it's a very difficult situation.

"We have written to all our clients to let them know what's going on.

"They are very disappointed. There is some anger at the lack of provision and lack of discounts."

For the 11,000 people who have cards - mainly the elderly and unemployed - the move will mean higher prices at sports centres, lunch clubs and play schemes across the borough.
