Arrests during police week of targeted action

Eight people have been arrested, £6,500 in cash has been confiscated and nearly £1million in assets seized during a week of action against economic crime.

Among those arrested was a 38-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead, who was taken into custody on suspicion of money laundering during a raid in Tottenham, North London, and a 55-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation during a raid in Tring.

Operation Payback was a week of action – running from Friday, September 28 to Friday, October 5 – against those suspected of benefiting from crime. As well as the arrests, officers seized nearly £6,500 in cash and goods including designer bags, watches, shoes and a batch of steroids,

Confiscation Orders have been made at court to the sum of £196,916.35.

The man from Hemel Hempstead has been bailed until December 5, while the man arrested in Tring is on police bail until December 7.

Det Sgt Joe Quinlivan, from Hert Constabulary’s Economic Crime Unit, said: “The Proceeds of Crime Act gives us the power to disrupt criminals who think they can benefit from crime and we run regular operations to target them. With these powers, we can seize the profits of their illegal activities and remove these negative influences on our communities.”
