An Olympic project that was born in Hemel Hempstead and inspired people around the globe is in the running for a top award.

Quilts 4 London organised for 17,000 home-made pennants to be presented to the London Olympic and Paralympic athletes during the summer.

The project was the brainchild of Irene Heathcote and Catherine Hill and saw people close to home and as far away as Australia picking up their sewing kits to get involved.

Now the project has been shortlisted for the public voted People’s Choice Award in the Epic Awards in England

Irene, of Grovehill, said: “We were absolutely overcome when we found out that we’d been shortlisted.

“I think what we did was amazing. We’ve got as good a chance as anyone at winning.”

Another 2,000 pennants will be presented to participants in the UK Special Olympics being held in Bath this year.
