Backtracking on boundary changes welcomed by MP

Proposals to extend the Hemel Hempstead parliamentary constituency to the edge of Luton have been scrapped.

As part of a bid by the Boundary Commission to drop the number of MPs from 650 to 600, a shake up is being carried out to re-draw many parliamentary constituencies across the UK.

This included a proposal to extend the Hemel Hempstead constituency into south Bedfordshire, including Kensworth. The move would also have seen MP Mike Penning lose Ashridge and Potten End.

But new proposals have been drawn up, to be consulted on and then decided next year, keeping the current constituency boundary with the addition of Bedmond and Primrose Hill.

Mr Penning said that while he fully supports the need to change constituencies, he believes the revised proposal makes more ‘geographic sense’.
