A singing group for Alzheimer’s sufferers in Hemel Hempstead will be accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra in three special workshops.

Singing For The Brain, a national Alzheimer’s Society project, engages those dealing with dementia through music and social interaction.

The programme is now working alongside the BBC band who have chosen five regional classes, including those held at the Crawley Drive Community Centre in Grovehill, to take part in singing sessions with instrumental accompaniment.

Although Singing For The Brain classes are usually sung a cappella, having four players from the orchestra join the group is hoped to add to the musically stimulating experience for dementia sufferers.

The orchestra’s learning producer Laura Metcalfe said: “We believe it is important to take music to older members of the community and include them in our activities, so we’re delighted to be working closely with those living with dementia in Hemel Hempstead.”

The first of the three orchestral workshops will be held on Tuesday, March 19.
