Cadets will take to the streets

Under the cover of darkness on Saturday more than 250 air cadets will compete in their annual overnight orienteering exercise.

Supported by RAF Halton, more than 30 squadrons will enter teams of air cadets who will undertake a planned route around Halton, Wendover and the surrounding areas.

They are competing to see who can correctly finish the course in the shortest time and all in the dark.

In recent years cadets, aged between 13 and 17, have braved snow, sleet and rain, so will be hoping for a mild and moonlit night to help them on their way.

The teams, dressed in camouflage uniforms, must ensure they have excellent map reading and compass skills in order to obtain the correct stamps at various check points.

Event organiser Flight Lieutenant Dylan Doster-Edwards said: “We put an awful lot of advance planning into the event, which is one of the highlights of the air cadet year. In addition to deploying over seventy adult staff as marshalls around the route, we liaise with the local police, RAF Halton, and parish councils to ensure that the exercise passes off safely for the cadets and with no issues for the general public, who are hugely supportive of us.”

Members of the public who spot the young cadets out and about are encouraged to cheer them on and marshalls will be on hand to answer any questions.
