Car bursts into flames on M1

The driver of a purple Volvo had a lucky escape after its engine burst into flames on the M1.

Firefighters were called out to tackle the blaze between Junctions 9 and 10 of the northbound carriageway at about 4.45am on Monday.

Herts Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Tom Shipp said: “The car was on the hard shoulder with its engine compartment well alight.

“The cause was recorded as accidental and no one was injured.”
