Firefighters are urging people to check their smoke alarms when the clocks go back.

Changing the time on Sunday morning will be on many people’s to-do list but too many householders put their safety at risk by failing to check their smoke alarms regularly.

Herts chief fire officer Roy Wilsher said: “Most fires start at night and if you are asleep and don’t have a working smoke alarm to wake you up, your chances of escaping unharmed are low.”

The fire service advises householders to check their smoke alarms weekly.
