Chilterns Countryside Festival

More people than ever before went to this year’s Chilterns Food and Countryside Festival.

Highlights of the annual festival included ferret races, tree surgery and sheep sheering demonstrations and two chainsaw sculptors – one making animals and another making garden furniture.

There were more than 120 stalls, a hog roast, lamb burgers, paella, five bands performing, and refreshments on offer from Tring Brewery.

There were also enactments showing what it was like to make knives and other tools in prehistoric times.

More than 6,000 people turned out for the event in Meadleys Meadow near the Bridgewater Monument in Ashridge on Sunday.

Graeme Cannon, who manages the Ashridge Estate for the National Trust, said: “We had a fantastic day. It was cracking.

“It was a really good opportunity to showcase the Chilterns and all it has got to offer.

“The festival is now in its sixth year and has become a real fixture in the countryside event calendar. People ring us weeks in advance to find out what’s going on.”

Cash made from the event will be split between its organisers, the National Trust and the Chilterns Conservation Board.

The National Trust spends £750,000 a year on the upkeep of the Ashridge Estate.
