Council says no to camera

Council chiefs have decided not to buy a thermal imaging camera that householders could use to check the green credentials of their homes.

The move was decided against after it emerged the camera would cost 5,000 and residents would need training in its use.

A full meeting of Tory-controlled Dacorum Borough Council heard that private contractors charged around 85 to check a property while Three Rivers District Council, which has a camera, charged residents around 30 to borrow it.

Under the proposals, suggested by the Liberal Democrats, the camera would be used to measure heat loss and the quality of insulation in a building.

But Bert Chapman, cabinet chief for environment, told councillors residents would need half a day's training to use the camera.

"With the financial constraints we're under it's not going to run I fear, but it's something for the future, he said.

However, he said the council did have funding to supply loft and cavity wall insulation.
