County boost for business

County council chiefs are hoping to set up a new organisation to boost economic growth.

Herts County Council is among the first to apply to the government to create a Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

LEPs, which replace Regional Development Agencies, are designed to encourage closer working between local authorities and businesses to provide 'strategic leadership to create the right environment for business and growth'.

Leader of the county council Robert Gordon said: "Hertfordshire is already the fifth largest economy in the country outside London and is a great place to live and build business.

"We are extremely ambitious for our economy. Our proposal for a Local Enterprise Partnership has the support of key businesses, of business organisations, academia and local government in the county.

"It will also give us the basis to create flexible cross-boundary relationships with our neighbours.

"Already a leading contributor to the UK's economy, Hertfordshire has the potential to become a truly world-class economy
