‘Danger’ homes anger

Around a dozen people turned out to vent their anger about plans for back garden development on a ‘dangerous’ junction in Hemel Hempstead.

A meeting of Dacorum Borough Council’s development control committee was told a councillor was ‘nearly wiped out’ when he visited the site in Sunnyhill Road.

Under the plans an existing single home will be demolished and replaced with seven homes and six apartments with a new access road.

The steep access will have under-road heating to prevent vehicles slipping in icy conditions, but concerns were still expressed about where it joins Sunnyhill Road on a tight bend.

Councillor Allan Lawson told the meeting: “I visited the site and nearly got wiped out. I shudder to think what it will be like when it snows.”

Councillor John Whitman said: “That will be really dangerous.”

One man, shouting from the public gallery to the agent representing the developers, said: “Walk your child down that street when it’s snowing.”

Councillor Janice Marshall, who represents the area, said: “I support the 28 residents living nearby opposed to this application.”

The committee, going against officers’ advice to approve the scheme, voted instead to defer the plans in order to get more information from the developers.
