Dessert company guilty of failure to recycle its waste

A frozen desserts and cakes manufacturer was ordered to pay thousands of pounds after failing to register as a producer of packaging waste.

Rensow Patisserie Limited, on Upper Icknield Way, Tring, which did not recover and recycle packaging waste either, was fined around 26,500 at Watford Magistrates' Court on Friday (September 3).

The company pleaded guilty to failing to register with the Environment Agency or a compliance scheme as a producer of packaging waste, as well as failing to meet its requirements to recover and recycle packaging waste between 2003 and 2008.

It was fined 20,000 and ordered to pay around 2,600 in costs to the Environment Agency.

Renslow Patisserie also has to pay around 4,000 in compensation to the Environment Agency.

The company admitted it failed to provide evidence of recovering and recycling packaging waste it handled, including paper, glass, plastic and ceramic packaging.

The Environment Agency contacted the company and requested information about the packaging material it handled.

Information provided showed the company should be registered as a packaging waste producer after handling more than 50 tonnes of packaging per year, with an annual turnover of more than 2million.

By not registering with the Environment Agency or a compliance scheme, it was estimated the company saved around 22,000.

A company director attended an interview under caution on December 10, 2008, and confirmed the company exceeded turnover and tonnage thresholds.

Environment officer Helen Pavlou said the money saved would have directly supported the recycling industry.
