Experts needed to create life skills room
12-582 Collett School, Hemel Hempstead is hoping for a new kitchen. In the photograph are three of the pupils who are keen on cooking, from left, Lucy Rankin, Henry Hammond and Billy Bradley, all aged 16, and Jay Baillie who teaches cooking and Ady Fisher, contract manager for Apollo Housing.
A SCHOOL that teaches youngsters with learning difficulties is calling for assistance to create a life skills room that will help to ensure pupils develop into independent adults.
Teacher at The Collett School, Jay Baillie, has organised for all the fittings and fixtures for the overhaul to be donated, with goods being provided by Benchmarx Kitchens and City Plumbing, and a Herts-based company lined up to fit it all.
But now she needs qualified professionals, who can lend a hand in August, to decorate and tile.
“We are putting out a call to arms to see if there is anybody in the area – a bit like a DIY SOS project,” said Jay. “We seriously need help.”
The plan is to transform the current rundown food technology room into a life skills room – made up of four individual kitchens – where youngsters will learn essential tasks like cooking, washing and ironing.
Someone is also needed to put up a partition wall to make space for a sensory room.
