Footballers fly the flag

Young footballers were presented with a photograph of their flag being handed over to a top army chief in Afghanistan.

Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning took the flag, belonging to Hemel Hempstead Town Football Club, with him on a visit to the war zone in January.

The club's under 10s team were one of the first groups to back Mr Penning's Christmas Treats for Troops campaign, which urged Dacorum residents to put together shoeboxes of luxuries for servicemen and women.

They donated around 30 boxes and to date about 1,000 packages packed with goodies have been sent to soldiers from the borough.

"The troops are over the moon when they receive the parcels," said Mr Penning.

"Some guys get a lot of parcels from their families and loved ones but a lot of them don't get any because they don't have loved ones."

The football team has pledged to give more boxes as Mr Penning continues the gift campaign into 2010. "Our troops are not just for Christmas, they need parcels from us all year round," he said.

The team were also presented with Help For Heroes wristbands by the MP.
