Have your say on who gets sports funding

FIVE sport clubs now need the community’s backing in their bid to reach gold in a cash award scheme.

Finalists in the Riverside Community Sports Awards, which is giving away £1,000 to two deserving clubs, have been announced this week.

They are Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club, which wants to use the cash to set up a swim academy, High Herts Riding School, which wants to help out local schools that have been hit by funding cuts by allowing pupils to keep taking riding lessons there, Hemel Martial Arts, where owner Denniston Sutherland has dreams of expanding the gym space and buying new equipment, Hemel Hempstead Town Cricket Club, which would spend the cash on new equipment for young players and Dacorum Majorettes, which, if successful, would splash out on uniforms and new equipment.

The competition, launched to celebrate a summer of sporting fun including the Olympics and the European Championships, is being run by Riverside Shopping Centre in partnership with the HeraldExpress’s big sister paper the Gazette.

But it is down to readers to decide which two clubs will each bag a bumper £1,000.

Voting is now open and all you have to do is visit one of eight shops within the Riverside complex and ask staff there for a token.

The participating stores, which will have voting stations on display, are Debenhams, Starbucks, Clintons, Laura Ashley, Monsoon, Waterstones, Next and HMV.

For more information on each club and more details about the scheme, don’t miss next week’s edition of our sister paper, the Gazette.
