Hemel’s welcome sign is finally completed

A new welcome sign letting people know they have arrived in Hemel Hempstead is now finished.

Completion of the flint and brick structure, which greets motorists as they leave the M1, was delayed by weeks after bricks to finish it were faulty and had to be re-made.

The sign, costing £6,000, is part of a regeneration project to spruce up the Breakspear roundabout, which is home to the three giant blue metal arches that form the Phoenix Gateway sculpture.

Planting around the sign and on the roundabout is expected to start this month or early in October and will include five English oak trees – representing the oaks on Dacorum’s crest – 21 trees and hedging along Green Lane, along with shrubbery, ornamental grass and bulbs.

The total cost of the works, including maintenance for three years, is around £157,000 and has come from grants and financial contributions made by developers who have built locally.
