It’s game on in Tring as players remember fallen hero David Barnsdale

THE man watched by millions as he climbed the flagpole during the Paralympics closing ceremony earlier this month will join the friends and family of a soldier who died in Afghanistan at a football fundraising event in his memory.
Captain Luke Sinnott was the troop commander of David Barnsdale from Tring, and will be the guest of honour at the charity match at Tring Corinthians Football Club on Sunday, October 7.
Captain Sinnott lost both his legs above the knee in a bomb explosion just a few weeks after Corporal Barnsdale died in similar circumstances.
The 24-year-old engineer, above, died in 2010 when he was clearing an area in Helmand province.
Last year his friends and family paid tribute to him with a football match in support of Help For Heroes.
This year’s memorial match will support the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help (SAFFA).
There will be four teams – two army teams and two Tring teams – playing and there will also be an auction, for which organisers are still collecting lots.
Last year about 400 people turned out to remember David and raise funds for charity.
His father Steve said he thinks it’s great that David’s friends and colleagues have decided to do it for a second time.
He said: “Last year we had a great turn out and raised £2,947. I don’t know about the future, it’s one of those things where you see how it goes but I’m sure there will always be a football match.”
