Kobe’s pathway pain

Mums and dads who walk their little ones to school are calling for action to make a perilous pathway safe after a little boy tripped and smashed his head.
Little Kobe Quashie, aged three, fell as he walked to Chambersbury Primary School in Hill Common, Hemel Hempstead, with mum-of-four Laura Quashie on Monday.
Luckily the youngster, who was checked over at the town’s urgent care centre, was not seriously hurt but does have a nasty lump on his head.
But he is not the first youngster to fall victim to the uneven path, which is a main route for children walking to school from the Northend area.
“A lot of us walk together and the path is atrocious,” said Laura.
Her middle daughter Kaya, aged six, has also tripped over on several occasions and fellow walk to school dad Martin Stanhope says his son Dylan, also six, has fallen as well.
“My son has fallen over a couple of times because it is so uneven,” said Martin.
The Northend Residents Association contacted the authorities about the problem last year but Martin said workers just swept the path.
Chambersbury Primary School headteacher Desmond Taylor said he was not aware of the problem but will now be investigating and contacting council chiefs.
He said: “I think all efforts should be made to make sure access to school is safe especially as we are trying to encourage children to walk to school for their health.
“If pathways are stopping them walking safely to school then it goes against everything the government is trying to do.”
A Herts Highways spokesman said: “We are sorry to hear that a child fell over on the pavement in Chambersbury Lane and hope they are OK.
“Part of the path was repaired last year. No further major work was done as inspections confirmed the rest of the path was usable. However, we routinely repair any faults reported to us or that our inspectors spot.
“If residents spot any faults on pavements or roads, please do report them directly to us using our online fault reporting system on www.hertsdirect.org”
