Lorry driver tricked into handing over trainers worth thousands

A conman tricked a lorry driver into handing over his load of designer trainers worth tens of thousands of pounds during an early morning delivery.

The driver had parked his lorry in Swallowdale Lane, Hemel Hempstead, on Tuesday at around 7.30am, ahead of dropping off the Vans trainers nearby.

A man approached him and told him that he would not be able to drop-off the haul for several hours and was not allowed to stop at the location.

He then instructed the man to drive around the corner where the trainers would be loaded into a different vehicle with the help of several others. In total 10 pallets of trainers were taken.

The first offender is a white man aged 40 to 50 and was wearing a high visibility jacket. His helpers were also wearing high-visibility jackets.

Det Insp Justine Jenkins said: “The area where the incident took place is an industrial estate and it may have seemed that what happened with goods being loaded from one lorry to another vehicle wasn’t out of the ordinary. However, thousands of pounds of worth of trainers have been taken and it is important we trace these and those responsible.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and saw what happened or saw anything suspicious in the area to contact police. I would also like to appeal to anyone who has been offered cheap Vans trainers or offered them for sale in suspicious circumstances to contact police.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting crime reference number D1/12/6665. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
