A man was airlifted to a specialist trauma unit after his legs were crushed in what police are describing as an ‘industrial accident’.

The East of England Ambulance Service was called to Hamberlins Lane, Northchurch, just before 8.30am on Thursday (January 17).

Ambulance crews from Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead attended and the Herts Air Ambulance was dispatched.

Ambulance spokesman Gary Sanderson said the man had been ‘struck by metal objects’ but could not give any more information.

He said: “The man who we believe to be in his 40s received serious injuries to his legs and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown direct to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel for further care.”

Police have handed the case over to the Health and Safety Executive. A spokesman for the HSE said: “The HSE has been made aware and an investigation is under way.”
