Meet John Allan from Tring in Transition
This blog is about Tring in Transition, sustainability and saving the world without Messrs, Brown and Obama. OK – maybe a little help from Obama.
Tring is a Transition Town – there are over 150 worldwide, and 1,000 in the process of becoming one.
Berkhamsted is also a Transition Town, and Chesham is just about to become one. Trendy places like Berlin, Sydney, Los Angeles – UK places like Brixton, Lostwithiel, Bro Didyfi and Arran. Rumour has it that Hemel Hempstead is considering.

What's it all about? Who gets interested ? Why should I care? Good questions. Glad you asked them. I'll try and explain.
The movement started in Kinsale in Ireland and Totnes in England. Two stark facts were the motivators.
Fact 1 – oil doesn't last forever and we have used about half the world's oil and gas up.
After the halfway point it gets more difficult to extract – and more expensive. The hike in petrol prices, just before the recession hit, shows this.
Fact 2 – climate change is here to stay. What caused it is not so important as the fact that if we do nothing, we will suffer. We have to reduce CO2 to reduce the impact.
Just about everyone should be interested. Forget the Greens and the environmentalists – if you take action to reduce reliance on oil and gas, and reduce your CO2 output – you will save money. And in today's freaky world, that can't be bad.
Why should you care? How should I know! Maybe you want to save money because you see prices going up. Maybe you want your grandchildren to have some sort of reasonable place to live. Maybe you believe we were put here to make a difference.
It matters not – all that matters is that you are interested. If not -hit that escape button now and read something more to your liking.
Tring started down the Transition path about 18 months ago with a small group of eight people. Now we have 100 who sign up to information by email and letter, about 30 who are involved in our four action groups ( waste, energy, food and transport) and another 20 who help in various ways.
This blog will be their story – and a little bit about sustainability thrown in. The sustainability bit will be my personal views. Feel free to comment, disagree or blast off.
