Minutes add up for late workers
A business director has defended Hertfordshire workers after a report revealed lateness costs the economy more than £1billion per year.
Figures published by www.onepoll.com claim the average worker turns up three minutes late at least twice a week.
It adds up to 4.6 hours for each of the UK's 29.4million employees, costing more than 1.8billion based on the average salary.
But Herts Chamber of Commerce area director Rachel Boxhall believes most staff make this up in unpaid work.
She said: "Having run a small business myself I know how tiresome it can be when the same people are consistently a few minutes late.
"It seems amazing that those few minutes add up to so much.
"However, what the report doesn't take in to account is the number of times people work through their lunch break or stay on at the end of the day.
"It would be interesting to see a figure of how much businesses gain from people who work longer than their contracted hours and don't get paid for it."
